Tips for Beautiful Hair

by: Judy Panfili Valone

We have all had bad hair days. Unfortunately they are a part of our lives. But, there are ways to help reduce them. I have compiled a couple of tips in this article that will help you to not only avoid a bad hair day, but also give you more healthier hair.

Chemicals, Chemicals, Chemicals

Take a gander at your shampoo bottle. I bet you will see as one of the main ingredients, sodium laurel/laureth sulfate (SLS or SLES). What this chemical does is to help “soften” your water to make more lather. Unfortunately the price you pay for your scalp and hair for that foam is probably not the best trade off. You see SLS is a sulfuric acid. It is used in many products – usually in degreasers for car engines. And the same way it dissolves the grease on a car engine, it does to your skin and hair’s natural oil. It is best to look for a chemical free shampoo.

Hot Oil Treatment

If your hair is damaged or dry as a result of such things as coloring, blow-drying, straightening, or other styling factors, then a hot oil treatment is just what the doctor ordered. It helps to re-moisturize the hair and keep that “conditioned” healthy look longer without having to condition every day. Generally you will want to do a hot oil treatment once a week. Though this really depends on the dryness of your hair. Be sure to massage the oil thoroughly to be sure that the oil gets to the weak hairs and repairs the damaged ones.

Vitamins for your hair

One must remember that hair is mostly proteins. So a majority of nutritionists suggest that those wanting healthier hair should eat well balanced diets that include more healthy proteins, along with foods that are high in vitamin B, C, E, A, and K. MSM is a natural source of sulfur that is an essential component of collagen. Collagen is a protein that is very important for ones hair.

Curly Hair? Avoid the Combs

For those of you who have curly hair, it is best to avoid brushing your hair or using a fine tooth comb for grooming. Both can put a lot of stress on your hair and cause breakage. It is best for you to stick with using your fingers or, if you need to, use a large tooth comb.

Proper ingredients in your products

When purchasing hair products read the ingredients. Look for things like vegetable oils, herbs and essential oils, such as rosemary or ylang-ylang, soybean, safflower and corn oil. These are great for moisturizing and conditioning.

No head dress to bed

Remember in the older movies where the woman would wrap their hair up at night. Well guess what, it is now known that it is a no no. It is best not sleep with head bands, barrettes or other hair accessories. It can be extremely damaging to hair.

Scalp Massage

Stimulating and increasing blood flow with massaging your scalp is a great benefit. You see, with increased blood flow, it helps to feed the hair follicles. Often it helps to prevent and fight avoidable hair loss. Another great benefit of this is that it is extremely relaxing, calming, and helps to relieve headaches and tension.

Split End Trouble?

Have split or damaged ends? Did you know if you don’t take care of them that your hair will actually slow in growth? It is best to cut them off. Either yourself or by your stylist. Split ends must be cut approximately 1/4″ above the damage to really fix the problem. Try to avoid products that claim to “heal” split ends. They will only temporarily glue the split ends together and cause more damage in the future.

Hopefully with these tips you will soon be on your way to healthier and more full head of hair.  Remember that these tips are for human hair and they work just as well for a man as much as a woman.

Great tips. I will start shopping for shampoo without the laureth sulfate. I now notice, after reading your article, that every soap product I have has it in it.
